Our Mission: The Board of Directors of the Dade County Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association’s South Florida Chapter have each established a Mindfulness in Law Task Force to work together to introduce the South Florida legal community to information on mindfulness, mindfulness programming, and to support the formation of mindfulness practice groups.  Click here to read our Declaration of Purpose.

Spring 2015 Meeting: The Joint Task Force will meet at the DCBA Office located at 123 NW 1st Avenue at a date to be announced.

A Short History of Mindfulness in Law in South Florida: Beginning in 1998, mindfulness has been introduced to the legal community at the University of Miami School of Law, through mindfulness programs offered at law firms, in articles exploring mindfulness appearing in the Florida Bar News, the DCBA Bulletin, and in programs offered at Bar events and conferences. In 2009 the Annual Florida Bar Convention included a mindfulness program with Judge Alan Gold, George Knox, Leonard Riskin, and Scott Rogers introducing mindfulness to a state-wide audience.

Mindfulness and the FBA
On March 11, 2011, Judge Alan Gold spoke on “Mindfulness and Civility” at an FBA luncheon coordinated by FBA president, Brett Barfield. His remarks led to a gathering in May that included DCBA and FBA presidents, Steven Davis and Brett Barfield, and DCBA president-elect, Andrea Hartley, Judge Chris McAliley, George Knox, Amy Ronner, and Scott Rogers, who felt the time was right to assess the legal communities’ interest in mindfulness and the ways mindfulness may benefit the legal profession and society. (Two years later, following the emergence of the Mindfulness in Law Joint Task Force, Professor Scott Rogers spoke on Mindfulness at an April 2013 FBA luncheon coordinated by Kevin Jacobs, Candace Duff, and other members of the FBA leadership).

Mindfulness in Law Committee
In June 2011, the group formed a Mindfulness in Law Committee attended by bar leaders, state and federal judges, attorneys, law professors, and law clerks. Its mission was to acquire a shared understanding of mindfulness, practice mindfulness together, and assess ways in which a more formal and broad reaching approach to introduce mindfulness to the legal profession.

The Committee Learns and Practices Mindfulness
Over the course of 2011, the group met on several occasions, were led in mindfulness discussion and exercises by Judge Alan Gold and Professor Scott Rogers, who directs the University of Miami School of Law’s Mindfulness in Law Program. Together the group confirmed a shared sense of purpose that lead to Bar Presidents, Andrea Hartley and Brett Barfield, working with their respective boards in the formation of the joint task force.  Click here to read a more complete chronology of mindfulness in law events leading up to Judge Gold’s talk on mindfulness and civility.
